Looking good is a skill that can be learned over time. Everyone, regardless of size and shape, can look stylish and confident. Here are 5 essential tips for plus-size men to enhance their style and create a balanced, slimmer appearance. We follow a simple rule of balance. The key for plus-size men is to add vertical length to the body through outfits and create a balanced look.

1. Colors

Wearing dark colors such as navy, black, brown, dark green, and maroon can help create depth and make you look less broad. Opt for monochromes (same colors as image 2) or low-contrast outfits to achieve a cohesive look.

2. Add Vertical Length

Incorporate vertical stripes or vertical prints, small prints like checks and florals to elongate your silhouette. Vertical color blocking can also work wonders. Accessories such as scarves or stoles that create vertical lines add to the slimming effect. As a personal stylist, I've always found layering as one of the best ways to add vertical length and add slimming effect.

3. Shirts and Collars

Avoid overly loose shirts as they add unnecessary volume. Opt for straight-fit formal or semi-formal shirts with a little ease around the stomach area. Standard collars are best, especially for those with shorter necks. Layering can be effective; wearing a lighter color inside and a darker color outside creates a vertical line that makes you look thinner. Tailor-made shirts are highly recommended for the perfect fit. Fold the sleeves, to show some skin for slimming.

4. Necklines and T-Shirt Lengths

Closed necklines can make you look bulkier. Choose V-necks to show some skin, which helps in creating a slimmer appearance. Avoid overly tight or body-hugging t-shirts. The ideal t-shirt length is about an inch below the belt, avoiding too long lengths that can imbalance your look. Vertical color blocked t-shirts are also good.

5. Pants

Pants should be regular fit with slight tapering at the bottom for a balanced look. Darker colors work best. Chinos are a great option if they are not too short. Wear pants below your stomach for a more flattering look when tucking in your shirt. This prevents creating extra folds and dents in your stomach area.

Tip: Adding suspendors to hold the trousers waist always work.

Folding the trousers' hem slightly also adds a stylist touch.

Things to Avoid:

  • Bigger, bolder, and high-contrast patterns as they make you appear larger.

  • Light colors, unless strategically used.

  • Clothes that are too loose or too tight.

  • High necks and closed necks as they can make you look more stuffed.

  • Overly covering up, which can negate the possibility of a slimming effect.

By following these tips, you can enhance your style, feel confident, and look your best. Want to know more about what will suit you? Book a session with me for personal styling or an image makeover.
